The world of Naruto seems to be an odd crossing of modern times and the feudal lord period. While the majority of the world is limited to one massive continent with a smattering of island around it, of which only a few are of remotely comparable  size, we have a world that has very basic technology such as landline telephones, radios, and television but still depends on animal drawn wagons and fishing boats with tiny motors. It is in this world that we see courtly intrigue amongst the daimyo’s that rule the varying nations while keeping the hidden villages that protect the host nations in check (and in some cases dependent of them).

It is in this world that we find Hinata, who is primarily a side character with appearances almost entirely sporadic throughout the series. She’s first introduced in chapter 34 with the beginning of the chunin exams when she’s 11/12 as a character who sees and adores Naruto where everyone else is willing to turn their backs on him.

Shortly before the beginning of round 3 of the exams she listens to Naruto’s doubts and reassures him that he is strong and admits to admiring him for his determination and strength to overcome his failures. Afterwards she watches the match and faints from the injuries she received in the preliminaries from her cousin and while she receives medical attention does not regain consciousness until after Sasuke escapes to Otogakure and Orochimaru.

From there Hinata is not really seen again until Naruto returns to Konoha after being away for two years travelling the world with the Sanin Jiraiya. She is shown just long enough to get a glimpse of Naruto before turning bright red and fainting much to Naruto’s confusion.Again she disappears from the foreground until nearly a year later when Pein attacks Konoha, and successfully levels the majority of the village.

She watches much of the destruction with her teammates Kiba and Shino at first and then they separate to search for family. At some point during her search she is caught under rubble as Pein decimates the remainder of the village and emerges mostly unharmed along with her bodyguard Ko. Ko was not nearly as lucky as she was and she initially attempts to find medical attention for him, only to learn that Naruto was facing Pein alone. And upon realizing this makes an attempt to join Naruto on the battlefield only to be stopped by Ko who like most Hyuuga saw her as weak and tells her she would only burden Naruto.

She accepts his words just as Pein pins Naruto and seeing her crush and inspiration trapped and likely about to die, she throws Ko’s warning to the side and rushes to help Naruto. She steps between them despite knowing she is entirely out classed by Pein, and when Naruto’s asks why she would throw her life away she responds that it is because she loves him.After this Hinata disappears yet again from the manga and only reappears in the Fourth Shinobi War Arc, where she fights alongside many of her fellows of the Allied Shinobi Army against Madara and the Ten-Tails. She is shown protecting her cousin at one point on the battlefield as he is bordering on overusing his byakugan and as such has many blind spots.

However her true plot significance doesn’t come until the Ten-Tails attempts a pinpoint attack on Naruto, knowing she could not deflect the spears like she had in a previous attack from the Ten-Tails, she jumps in front of them in order to protect Naruto with her life.Only instead of her dying, her cousin Neji leaps in between her and the spears and takes the deathblow for her.

Cradling her cousin she listens as he tells Naruto that his life is not his own, that Naruto’s life belongs to all the shinobi fighting to protect him and that he shouldn’t allow Neji’s sacrifice to be in vain. As her cousin died she cried openly on the battlefield while Naruto looked on in shock. And seeing an opening Marada, who was revealed to be Obito, attempted to break Naruto’s spirit and entice him to join him and the revived Madara in destroying the shinobi villages.But seeing that it might actually work and that Naruto was hesitating, Hinata slapped Naruto as hard as she could across the face and was just about to launch in a very lovely speech about how beloved Naruto was and how he was no longer alone, and confess her love to him when she was pulled away from her home and brought here.

PERSONALITY: Hinata is a hard girl to get a read on. Most people tend to think of her as shy, if a little weird, but she is also more than what people see. Yes, she is shy to those she is unfamiliar with, and she has more than a handful of physical ticks to indicate her discomfort. They can range anywhere from tapping her index fingers together to touching her mouth, many of them she’s overcome in the three years since her first attempt at chunin, but sometimes in highly stressful situations or when around Naruto they do come out again, especially her very famous habit of turning bright red around him. But without them there wouldn’t be anything to help give Hinata that little push of determination to become better and make her family proud. She can make small talk just fine under most circumstances; it’s when it comes to sharing anything personal that she tends to get evasive, feeling that no one really needs to be burdened by the details of her life as well as their own.Being demure is only one part of her.

Hinata is a very empathetic person, easily being able to relate to the emotions of those around her. She might wear her emotions openly for all to see as opposed to the stoic expression common to her family, but she is just as likely to pick up on someone’s feelings. This is especially true of her feelings for the clan's branding policy of Branch House members. She understands how members of the Branch House feel about the policy, and quite frankly, she agrees with it, which is why she wishes to change that policy when she takes over. Also, knowing that a friend might be feeling rather down tends to lead to her trying to help them out of their slump. Some attempts are more awkward than others, depending on their familiarity, but she tries to help where possible.Which leads to yet another part of Hinata’s personality: she’s thoughtful. Even when on missions there is very little that she does that isn’t meant to help care for her teammates. She’s almost motherly, you could say, as she wouldn’t be against taking a hit for a teammate or bringing a pot of soup to a friend that was sick. To her they are of the same importance. It isn’t so much that she can anticipate everything someone will need either, and she wouldn’t try to as that would border on invading on someone’s privacy. She knows just how annoying that can be.

Likewise, she’s the picture of proper and polite, always addressing people with the proper honorific. It’s as much a force of habit as an effort to afford people with the respect they deserve, as well as recognizing the status of their relationship. The fact that she seeks to provide people with the appropriate level respect is a huge sign of the manners her father drilled into her from when she was young. Her manners are part of the reason she sometimes gets embarrassed by Kiba’s brashness in delicate situations as his concept of how to treat people tends to border on treat most everyone as on the same level and trash talk those that think they’re better than him regardless of if they are or not. She is painfully aware of things such as ones position in the hierarchy of clan and village and takes great pains to use her politeness and kind heart to treat everyone with the respect they deserve or more, though she does tend to stop short of brown nosing. Her aspirations are simple and they can only be achieved through her own efforts so it would be pointless at least in her mind to curry favor from those superior to her.

To top it off, she doesn’t hold a very high regard for confrontation or violence. If she had any choice at all in the matter Hinata would be living a civilian life within Konoha. She still doesn’t particularly like confrontation or violence, but she recognizes that they are sometimes the only options left, especially when it comes to defending her home. It isn’t something she wishes to rush into head first, but she won’t ever be accused of cowardice either. Like many things in life, confrontation and fighting have their place in life. In the face of confrontation from friends or her father she has a tendency to freeze or entirely stiffen her posture. She doesn’t shrink away as she did as a child, but her discomfort isn’t exactly a secret. Like her problems with fighting, she has spent a great deal of time working to control her physical reactions, although there are still times where she slips up and freezes or overcompensates in her attention to posture and eye contact.

Finally, she’s quiet. She doesn’t speak up, often preferring to listen than to take part. This isn’t necessarily because she has nothing to contribute, but that she likes observing more than being the center of attention. She would rather sit back and absorb information than be the one to have all eyes on her, looking to her to lead the way. She’s capable of doing that, but it isn’t a role she desires outright as every leader needs a solid support structure, and that is where she feels most comfortable. It isn’t quite as bad in small group social interactions as no one is really the center, but larger groups give her pause before she finally accepts the invitation.Of course, any situation that involves Naruto tends to make her quiet demeanor come out even more.

POWER:Byakugan:  Hinata possesses the Byakugan like the rest of the members of the Hyuuga clan. Like all Hyuuga, Hinata can see in nearly 360 degrees for 50 meters and focus that to 10km in one direction. She has access to the infrared vision as well as the ability to see the chakra pathway system, however it is unknown if she is capable of also seeing the 361 tenketsu points on the human body. She can see through genjutsu (with only one known genjutsu being impervious to the byakugan), solid objects, and distinguish between non-corporeal clones and their corporeal originals.

It is possible for a Byakugan user to suffer from overuse of the doujutsu; however Hinata seems perfectly capable of using her Byakugan for nearly a full day without suffering from eye strain and vision impairment. The Byakugan has one important weakness, it has a blind spot that extends from a small point on the back of their neck just above the first thoracic vertebra and grows steadily wider the further from the body you go. This blind spot is also highly dependent on how close the user is to overusing the byakugan. The longer one uses the byakugan and the more they continue to use it after reaching their limit the more holes in their field of vision they will develop until they achieve complete temporary blindness while their eyes recover.The byakugan is a key component to the Gentle Fist style that her family is known for using almost exclusively.

Gentle Fist: The Gentle Fist is a cross between taijutsu and ninjutsu, as it relies on physical hand to hand combat blows combined with the expelling of chakra from the user tenketsu to seal their targets chakra system. The Gentle Fist is an umbrella term for a number of complicated maneuvers that can do anything from immobilize part of the body, incapacitate the opponent, or outright kill them. There are also defensive moves within the style that are designed to protect the Hyuuga’s one key weakness by constantly shifting their blind spot by spinning while expelling chakra out and around them as a hardened spinning shield around their body called Kaiten. Unlike most Main Branch members who use the Kaiten to protect themselves, Hinata has developed her own shield, which takes advantage of her high flexibility and chakra control and weaves a chakra net around herself to deflect attacks.
